Broken Silence.

Christmas is hands down my favorite holiday! There is something about this season that makes me so giddy with excitement. After Thanksgiving, I jump into full blown Christmas mode...and it is wonderful!

With each year that comes, it is so easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of this crazy season that the whole purpose for celebrating starts to become stale. Each year there are new presents to open and new memories to make. How could a story thousands of years old possibly compete with the excitement and anticipation of what awaits?!

A few years ago, I noticed this trend and it laid heavy in my heart. I began to pray for God to reveal something new to me each year, and He has been so faithful to answer!

This year, He has continuously pointed out the beauty of broken silence. No one likes awkward silences. They are usually uncomfortable for most of the parties involved. Now, I'm sure some of you would go great lengths to get a little silence these days...but I'm not referring to the peaceful kind of silence. I'm talking about the painful silence that seems to cut deep into your soul.

Imagine being in a relationship with someone who means so much to you. Getting the silent treatment from them is the worst form of punishment. Now, imagine that silence lasted 400 years. Obviously, that isn't possibly between human relationships. However, it did happen between God and His people.

The condition of our world seems unbearable at times. The news is filled with brokenness, evil, and a whole lot of real hurt. And that is with the Holy Spirit presently moving and working on Earth. I could not even begin to fathom how hopeless the world felt when the God of the Universe decided to leave them to their sin for 400 years. A lot can happen in such a long amount of time...yet none of that was enough to mess up God's plans.

After hundreds of painfully desperate, hopelessly lonely years...the silence was broken. An angel appeared, truth was spoken, prophesies were fulfilled, a baby was born.

This is such a sweet story of reconciliation. God could not bear the silence any longer. He needed to do something that would get His people to pay attention to His character and love again. He wanted to be drawn back into a relationship with His people and He has not left them since.

I'm not sure where you are at as you are reading this. But my prayer is that this Christmas you will hear the story of history anew! Let the simplicity of this truth triumph over the chaos and the noise this Christmas. Let the Lord break the silence between the two of you and give Him your attention today!
